Learn Dutch next to your work

You can start working without perfect Dutch. A little Dutch every week helps you at work and in daily life.

Open book with speech bubbles: learning a new language

On NOWEWO you can find work in your own language. That is a good start. But even a little Dutch makes life easier: talking with colleagues, reading your payslip, making an appointment with a doctor. It can also help you find more work later.

Free and cheap ways to start

  • Taalhuis: many public libraries have a Taalhuis, where volunteers help you learn Dutch. Ask at the library in your town.
  • Oefenen.nl: a free website with short lessons and videos for beginners.
  • Language café (taalcafé): in many towns you can practise speaking Dutch with other people, in a relaxed way.
  • Your municipality (gemeente) often knows about free or cheap courses near you.

Civic integration (inburgering)

Some newcomers have to pass the civic integration exam. Your municipality and DUO can tell you what applies to you and which courses you can follow.

Learning at work

  • Ask your employer if they help with a language course. Some employers pay for it.
  • First learn the words you use most at work: tools, products and safety.
  • Ask colleagues to speak Dutch with you, slowly.
  • Practise ten minutes every day, for example with an app on your phone.

Your own language stays your strength. On NOWEWO, employers look for exactly that. Dutch is a bonus.
